We have developed a threshold Cherenkov counter using a liquid radiator and a simple array of mirrors for light collection. The index of refraction of the ftuorochemicaJ radiator is 1.282 (at 400 nm). This is signifi cantly less than that of water (1.33) and thus provides for a higher � threshold. Our device also doubles as a differential Cherenkov counter. It can detect and distinguish particles several centimeters off the optical axis.The counter has been built, tested, and used successfully in several heavy ion experiments U], [2]. The optical system is designed for maximal pion detection efficiency at a momentum of 1 GeV Ie. The counter has a high pion detection efficiency over a wide range of momenta. It produces pulse height distribu tions that allow resolution of pions from kaons and other heavy charged particles at 1 GeV Ic with high efficiency. Pulse height spectra were obtained and detection efficiencies were measured for pions of varions momenta between 100 MeV Ie and 1 GeV Ie.These measurements agree well with Monte Carlo simulations.In heavy ion experiments, this counter was used as an ex tremely effective pion veto. It yielded a pion rejection to pion acceptance ratio of 10 4 •The design is one that was easily, quickly, and inexpensively constructed. It enabled the experimenter to build a liquid (dif ferential or threshold) Cherenkov counter with a higher � threshold than that of water and lower than that of Aerogel.There are very few materials that can be used for Cherenkov counter construction with � thresholds in this velocity region.

Advances in the technologies associated with position sensitive gaseous detectors especially featuring CsI as reflective photoconverters will be reviewed. These photodetectors represent the most effective solution for what concerns cost and performance in the case of large area Cherenkov imaging applications in relatively low rate (or low occupancy) high energy physics and astrophysics experiments. Moreover, they are the only choice when the Cherenkov detector is embedded in a magnetic field. Recently proposed single-photon MPGDs (Micro-Pattern-Gaseous Detectors) will be also discussed in view of the successful efforts so far made to extend their sensitivity to visible light. With some modifications, photosensitive gaseous detectors can also be used in the imaging of X-rays and particles.

a b s t r a c tGases with relatively high refractive index, n À 1 ! 500 Â 10 À6 at atmospheric pressure, giving a satisfactory photoelectron yield at relatively low pressures ( 5bar) are rare. These gases are often the only practical solution for low momentum particle identification in conventional secondary beam lines. The refractive index of R134a, one of the most common gases available to the physics community, has never been measured or reported. In the present note, the results of a dedicated experiment to estimate the refractive index of R134a, using mixed hadron/electron beams in the range 0.5-10 GeV are presented.
