Cerebral sinus venous thrombosis in inflammatory bowel diseases

Abstract: The overall outcome was very good, especially in those patients who were treated acutely with heparin or low molecular weight heparin, suggesting that heparin administration is related with improved neurological outcome and decreased mortality rates even in IBD patients complicated with CVT.

“…Stroke and central venous thrombosis (CVT) should also be considered as possibilities in the differential diagnoses for RPLS (9). CVT is a rare but devastating complication for IBD patients who are prone to thrombosis (17)(18)(19). The most common symptom of CVT is headache (80%), followed by seizure (35%), and altered conscious (21%), which are similar to the neurological symptoms of RPLS (18).…”

“…CVST is rarely described in patients with IBD; furthermore, it more commonly occurs in ulcerative colitis than CD. About 1.3 to 6.4% of adults with IBD develop CVST at some point during the course of disease [10,11]. The underlying mechanisms involved in coagulation activation in patients with IBD remain poorly understood.…”
