Cerebral palsy and neurodegenerative disease

Abstract: Cerebral palsy refers to a neurologic disorder of motor skills that is static in nature and is the result of injury to the brain before its development is complete. Many neurodegenerative or metabolic disorders have a slow rate of progression and can be misdiagnosed as cerebral palsy. Diseases that have been misdiagnosed as cerebral palsy are presented here to provide the clinician with framework for the complex evaluation of these patients.

“…More precise diagnoses 16 Definition and Classification of CP and links from pathology to patient's priorities for treatment need to be established. While motor disability is the hallmark of CP, therapists are well aware that other concurrent conditions can confound or even eclipse the motor disorder and must be included in these schemes.…”

“…13,14 With this understanding, the admonition to consider CP a symptom complex (or phenotype) which requires a thorough search for underlying diagnosable and perhaps treatable diseases seems particularly apt -a point also discussed in the recent practice parameter statement regarding diagnostic assessment of CP. 7,15,16 Modern neuroimaging will need to be coupled with diagnostic testing for a growing number of genetic and metabolic disorders in order to identify those few individuals with CP caused by rare diseases. Although current data indicates that less than 5% of cases of CP are caused by these conditions, the lack of systematic studies of populations affected by CP leaves questions regarding their true prevalence.…”

“…Cerebral palsy is defined as a disorder of movement and posture that develops from non-progressive lesions that can be caused by injury to the developing fetus and infant's brain; it is not a disease, so its clinical features are similar to a common syndrome [1]. The immature brain's development triggers constraints on their activities, and permanent obstacles to attitude development and movement.…”

“…Cerebral palsy is a static neurologic condition resulting from brain injury that occurs before cerebral development is complete. Because brain development continues during the first two years of life, cerebral palsy can result from brain injury occurring during the prenatal, perinatal, or postnatal periods (Bass 1999).The CP encompasses a spectrum of motor disorders of varying tone, anatomical distribution and severity. According to clinical classification CP is divided into Spastic, Dyskinetic, Hypotonic/Ataxic and Mixed type of CP.…”
