Cerebral Cysticercosis Manifesting as Hydrocephalus —Case Report—

Abstract: A 70-year-old female presented with gait disturbance and dementia. Cerebrospinal fluid examination revealed mild aseptic meningitis. Magnetic resonance images showed multiple cystic lesions and mural nodules in some of the cysts in the cerebral parenchyma. Metrizamide computed tomography clearly demonstrated multiple intracisternal cysts. Some cysts were surgically excised and a ventriculoperitoneal shunt was implaced. Postoperatively, her gait disturbance and dementia disappeared. Histological examination rev… Show more

“…Data on the frequency of ICH are scarce. In a series of Clinical presentation is generally sub-acute, but may also be chronic with the development of normal pressure hydrocephalus [32]. Hydrocephalus-producing mechanisms in these cases are varied; the most important is a deficit in CSF absorption due to chronic arachnoiditis and to fibrosis involving the arachnoid villi, the occlusion of Luschka's and Magendie's foraminae by thickened leptomeninges, and the parasite's mass effect on the ventricular system [33].…”

“…Contrary to seizures derived from other etiologies of acquired epilepsy, NCC seizures are usually not simultaneous with focal neurological signs (267). Intellectual impairment and behavior disorders may also be manifestations of NCC (184,213). Meningeal irritation depends on cysts located next to or within the subarachnoid space.…”
