“…The placing of this boundary has become increasingly problematical, since palynological evidence has revealed a number of sites in Britain and Ireland where there is evidence for pre-elm decline cereal cultivation (Groenman-van Waateringe, 1983;Edwards & Hirons, 1984;O'Connell, 1987). Published evidence for pre-elm decline in cereal cultivation in Wales is scanty.…”

“…Filicales (between 790 and 768 cm) also increases quite dramatically, suggesting a reduction in the density of the tree canopy. Hence, there is circumstantial evidence to suggest that pre-elm decline cereal cultivation took place at, or close to, Bryn y Castell, either by pioneer Neolithic agriculturalists or by indigenous Mesolithic peoples (see Edwards & Hirons, 1984).…”

“…the rational Alnus limit of Smith & Pilcher, 1973) where in many Irish pollen diagrams elm percentages may be reduced. The division may also post-date small fiuctuations in the elm pollen curve (Edwards & Hirons, 1984).…”

“…The event is especially intriguing as it seems to occur with remarkable synchroneity (Smith & Pilcher, 1973; but see Huntley & Birks, 1983) over large areas of north-west Europe, even outside-areas where elm was apparently frequent (Pennington et al, 1972). The elm decline also occurs at a critical period in the development of postglacial habitats; soon after the first evidence of permanent occupation and settled agriculture is found (Edwards & Hirons, 1984), around the time of a postulated climatic shift accompanied by strategraphic changes in bogs and lakes (Pennington, 1975;Aaby, 1976), and at a critical period of soil development where climatic chatige or anthropogenic activity possibly tipped the balance of soil processes towards accelerated degradation in some sensitive areas (Mitchell, 1972;Moore, 1974Moore, , 1975Sturludottir & Turner, 1985). Thus climate, man and soil maturation have all been invoked at various times as contributing factors to the elm decline.…”
