Cercaricidal activity of some essential oils of plants from Brazil

Abstract: Extended screening tests on the cercaricidal activity of various plants from northeast Brazil have shown that the extracts of the leaves and fruits of Piper marginatum, Protium heptaphyllum, and Capsicum annuum show a remarkable effect on the cercaria of Schistosoma mansoni. In the case of the oils of Piper marginatum and Capsicum annuum, 90--96% of the cercaria of Schistosoma mansoni were killed within 15 min. According to the NMR spectra, the active principles of the extracts seem to be water-soluble unsatur… Show more

“…22 Cercaricide property was atributted to the oil and leaves of caapeba-cheirosa. 82 The sesquiterpenes β-caryophyllene and germacrene D predominate in the oils of caapeba [Pothomorphe peltata (L.) Miq. and P. umbellata (L.) Miq., Piperaceae].…”

“…An earlier study on Dugesia (Baguna et al., 1989) showed that 10 −6  M capsaicin stimulated cell division, while 100-fold higher concentrations (10 −4  M) appeared to kill the worms. Finally, oil extracts of the leaves and fruit of the Brazilian pepper Capsicum annuum , which likely contain capsaicin, were shown to kill 90–96% of S. mansoni cercariae within 15 min (Frischkorn et al., 1978). However, an oil extract of the marigold pepper Piper marginatum , which is not a chili pepper (genus Capsicum ), and presumably does not contain capsaicin (Barceloux, 2009), had a similar effect on cercariae, suggesting that the killing of cercariae by these extracts may be independent of capsaicin.…”

“…The essential oils from the oleoresins of several Protium spp. have been shown to possess antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, antinociceptive, antioxidant, antitumor, acaricidal, molluscicidal and cercaricidal activities [2,[16][17][18][19][20][21]. Some of these activities have also been reported for the volatile oils from other parts of the plants, mainly leaves and fruits [1,2].…”
