Ceramic membranes applied to membrane distillation: A comprehensive review

Abstract: Membrane distillation (MD) has been increasingly studied in the past decade for its potential as a separation process of nonvolatile components. The present study demonstrates a comprehensive overview of the current progress and challenges in the application of ceramic membranes to MD based on the available state of the art. There are already published review papers about MD, but the present study focuses on ceramic membranes, which are still the few used in MD when compared to polymeric membranes. Significant … Show more

“…The proper selection of wastewater filtration membranes depends on a number of factors, such as productivity, service life, cost, separation selectivity, and chemical and mechanical integrity under operating conditions [ 117 ]. Compared with cellulose-based membranes which usually work at low temperature, ceramic membranes can work at high temperature; meanwhile the ceramic and other inorganic filtration membranes have excellent pH tolerance and strong resistance to chemical degradation [ 118 , 119 , 120 ]. The disadvantages of ceramic wastewater treatment are high investment cost and high treatment temperature.…”

“…Membrane technology is a promising candidate for the separation technology; it has wide range of industrial applications like drink water production, wastewater treatment, gas purification and alkaline or acidic media separation [237,238]. Recently, ceramic membranes have acquired more attention compared to other materials membrane due to good chemical resistance, thermo-mechanical stability, high separation efficiency, easy clean regeneration, anti-fouling performance and long lifetime [239,240]. However, the ceramic membranes are not much more commercially attractive than polymeric membranes due to its expensive cost.…”

“…Membrane contactors have received considerable attention in various applications such as membrane distillation (MD) for desalination [ 1 , 2 ], membrane absorption (MA) [ 3 ], and membrane stripping (MS) [ 4 ] for CO 2 capture, due to their high mass transfer area and flexible installation and operation. Four configurations of MD processes have been extensively investigated for separation, including direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD), air gap membrane distillation (AGMD), sweep gas membrane distillation (SGMD), and vacuum membrane distillation (VMD).…”
