CEO-employee pay gap and firm R&D efficiency

Abstract: Purpose This study aims to examine whether the pay gap between the chief executive officer (CEO) and non-executive employees affects the firm’s research and development (R&D) efficiency. Design/methodology/approach The dependent variable is the firm’s R&D efficiency, defined as a percentage increase in revenue from a 1-per cent increase in R&D spending. The main independent variable is the CEO-employee pay gap, defined as the ratio of annual total compensation for the CEO to the average of non-ex… Show more

“…Top managers play a crucial role in setting the firm's strategic plan, R&D agenda and capital investment (Chan et al, 2020). More specifically, the CEO is the central decisionmaker and has the greatest power to make critical investment and resource allocation decisions (Barker and Mueller, 2002).…”

“…The greater the power of the GM, the lower the probability of the VP being promoted to GM, which means that the opportunity cost of the VP leaving the company is lower, thus increasing the possibility of the VP seeking another job. On the other hand, a large vertical pay dispersion will not only reduce cohesion within the executive team (Guo et al , 2020) and reduce members’ motivation for work (Chan et al , 2020), but will also induce destructive activities within the executive team (Ensley et al , 2007) and even induce turnover tendencies (Xiong et al , 2018). In addition, Chinese culture emphasizes overall interpersonal harmony and a low gap between the rich and the poor and has a long-standing cultural tradition of “inequality rather than want is the cause of trouble.” Therefore, in the Chinese context, VPs are more sensitive to large pay gaps and are more likely to take actions such as reducing work commitment, undermining teamwork or even leaving voluntarily to alleviate feelings of unfairness and exploitation.…”

“…As such, RQ is the counterpart at the firm level of the most common method used by economists to estimate returns to R&D at the industry level (Hall et al , 2010; Knott and Vieregger, 2020). This distinctive measure of innovation efficiency, RQ, has gained traction in the literature lately (Knott, 2008; Cooper et al , 2015; Cremers et al , 2017; Harris et al , 2019; Chan et al , 2020; Hasan et al , 2020; Vairawan and Zhang, 2020; Iyer et al , 2020).…”

“…Future research on innovation should make use of this new measure. This novel metric for innovation efficiency has been rapidly adopted in the recent literature (Cremers et al , 2017; Harris et al , 2019; Chan et al , 2020; Hasan et al , 2020; Vairawan and Zhang, 2020; Iyer et al , 2020).…”
