“…Escoffier et al performed centrifuge tests on inclined and vertical pile groups using static cyclic loadings and confirmed the higher horizontal stiffness provided by the inclined pile group. This was also observed by Li and Li et al from dynamic sinusoidal and seismic centrifuge test results. The authors stated that in certain cases, batter piles play a beneficial role on the seismic behavior of the pile foundation system and that their performance depends not only on the characteristics of the earthquakes (frequency content and amplitude) but also on the type of superstructures they support.…”

“…Nonnegligible residual bending moments in the case of seismic input, and significant local non-linearities around the pile head when the inclined piles where loaded from the top, where found in experimental studies by Escoffier [9] and Goit and Saitoh [25], respectively. In this respect, more comparison studies between numerical results and existing [8,9,10] or new experimental data, should be performed.…”

“…Even though the use of inclined piles might seem to be detrimental in seismic areas in terms of their kinematic internal forces around the pile heads, there exist both numerical [2,1,7] and experimental [10] results that suggest that their use could be beneficial in many cases when looking at the total (kinematic plus inertial). This fact could be related to the role played by the rotational kinematic interaction response of the foundation observed here.…”

“…They confirmed that the performance of the batter piles degraded when the applied sinusoidal wave was in the region of the structure's natural period, and improved when the structure's natural period was in the region of that of the soil. Similarly, Li et al [13] analyzed the behavior of batter piles relative to the size of the structures by applying earthquake excitation. The batter piles had positive effects on the structure in terms of displacement and force and, overall, showed positive performance, especially in short structures.…”
