Central diabetes insipidus following cardiopulmonary arrest in a dog

Abstract: CPA has been described as a cause of ischemic injury to the pituitary gland resulting in CDI in people. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of a dog developing transient partial CDI following CPA and successful resuscitation.

“…DDAVP has been successfully used in other reports involving PTCDI in dogs (Authement et al, 1989;Bellis et al, 2015;Croton et al, 2019;Foley et al, 2009). In these cases, response to DDAVP therapy was confirmed with a combination of increased USG, increased urine osmolality, decreased serum osmolality, and normalized serum Na.…”

“…Authement et al (1989) was the first to describe CDI secondary to TBI in a dog who sustained a skull fracture at the level of the pituitary gland after being hit by a car. While CDI is most often seen secondary to TBI in dogs and cats, it has also been seen following cardiopulmonary arrest in an 8-week-old Golden Retriever (Bellis et al, 2015;Campbell & Bredhauer, 2005;Foley et al, 2009). In human medicine, PTCDI is extensively studied and associated with significantly increased morbidity and mortality, especially when developing early after TBI (Capatina et al, 2015).…”

“…A further case of CDI was reported in a male intact dog after cardiopulmonary arrest which occurred following a surgical procedure. This dog was treated with DDAVP which was successfully discontinued after two weeks of therapy [25].…”

“… 7 , 8 Additionally, non-structural causes of CDI that have been reported in other species include genetic mutations and hypoxic damage. 9 , 10 Factors such as the location damaged and size of the area affected influence whether the resulting DI is transient or permanent and, if transient, the time frame, duration and severity of clinical signs. 1 Studies in humans and veterinary species report that pituitary lesions are much more common than previously thought.…”
