Cementoblastoma–a review of literature

Abstract: Cementoblastoma is a rare odontogenic tumour of the jaws is a true neoplasm of cementum origin. It affects the younger population more. Cementoblastoma exhibits unlimited growth potential resulting in high recurrence rates if not excised completely. Although there are authors who advocate retention of the affected tooth, the majority suggests the removal of the affected tooth. Unless the lesion is diagnosed at an early stage, we conclude that resection with removal of the affected tooth is the best mode of tre… Show more

“…8 As the lesion matures, the differential diagnosis should include odontoma, osteoblastoma, cemental dysplasia, hypercementosis, and sclerosing osteitis, which can be distinguished using the following criteria. 3 9 10 11 Odontoma is not attached to the root and typically shows a tooth-like and heterogeneous density with a follicular space. 10 Osteoblastoma does not show tooth-mass continuity and has a more irregular pattern of radiopacity than benign cementoblastoma.…”

“… 11 Sclerosing osteitis is a well-defined radiopaque lesion that typically appears without any peripheral radiolucent rim, and is therefore easily differentiated from cases of benign cementoblastoma that usually show a distinct rim. 9 These salient features are crucial for distinguishing benign cementoblastoma from other lesions.…”

“…A characteristic peripheral radiolucent halo is present. Histologically, CB shows thick trabeculae of calcified cementum-like tissue [15]. The cementum appears basophilic with irregular reversal lines mimicking Paget disease of bone.…”
