Soft viscoelastic biological products such as biopolymers and biofilms have recently garnered significant interest as alternative biogrout materials for ground improvement because of their nontoxic and biodegradable characteristics. However, the impact of soft gel-like viscoelastic pore fillers on the undrained response of treated soils remains poorly understood. This study involves undrained triaxial compression tests with concurrent shear wave velocity measurements of loose contractive sands treated with soft gelatin. The specimens experience two distinct loading-gelation sequences, either consolidation before gelation (CbG) or confinement after gelation (CaG). Results reveal that the shear wave velocity can be used as an indicator of the effective stress carried by the granular skeleton. The inclusion of the viscoelastic biopolymer hinders the contractive tendency, diminishes postpeak softening, and increases the undrained shear strength of loose contractive sands. These effects become more pronounced for stiffer biopolymers because they provide an enhanced skeletal support against chain buckling and contraction. The presence of biopolymers increases the normalized undrained shear strength from S u =σ 0 o ¼ ∼0.1 to ∼1.4, particularly at low effective confining stress. The biopolymers alter the terminal state in the p 0 -q-e space. Therefore, critical states should be reconsidered for biopolymer-treated sands. The confinement-gelation sequence affects the effective stress supported by the granular frame and thus has pronounced effects on the undrained shear strength. This suggests the potential use of viscoelastic pore fillers as an effective treatment of loose sands prone to liquefaction.

The practice of soil-cement reinforced layers to bear shallow foundations is a feasible option in low bearing capacity soils. This paper addresses the interpretation of plate load tests bearing on compacted artificially cemented sand layers of distinct sizes and shapes (cylindrical and prismatic) overlaying a weakly bonded residual soil stratum. Static load tests were carried out on a rigid circular steel plate (diameter of 300-mm) resting on sand-cement reinforced layers with distinct areas (diameters/widths of 450, 600, and 900-mm) and constant thickness of 300-mm. The results have shown two distinct failure modes that rely on the cemented layer's diameter/width: (a) the steel plate and the artificially cemented layer punch together into the weakly bonded residual soil, without the failure of the cemented layer, and (b) the artificially cemented layer fails. The combination of two traditional methods for predicting bearing capacity in soils was successfully applied considering the shape (and geometry) of the improved layer and the existence (or not) of interaction of the lateral of the cemented layers and the residual soil. Finally, this study highlights the importance of considering the shapes and sizes of soil-cement layers in the bearing capacity estimation (combining analytical solutions) of spread footings resting on treated layers above weakly bonded residual soils.

Η ρευστοποίηση είναι το φαινόμενο εκείνο κατά το οποίο κορεσμένα κοκκώδη εδάφη υφίστανται σημαντική απομείωση της διατμητικής αντοχής και της ακαμψίας τους, ως αποτέλεσμα της παραμόρφωσης, που προκαλείται κατά τη στατική (μονοτονική), δυναμική ή ανακυκλική φόρτισή τους υπό αστράγγιστες συνθήκες. Κατά το σχεδιασμό των τεχνικών έργων, πολλές φορές απαιτείται βελτίωση της μηχανικής συμπεριφοράς των ρευστοποιήσιμων εδαφών. Σε θέσεις νέων κατασκευών, η αποτροπή του κινδύνου ρευστοποίησης κοκκωδών εδαφών δεν παρουσιάζει τεχνικά προβλήματα και γίνεται επιλέγοντας από μια σειρά καθιερωμένες μεθοδολογίες που στηρίζονται στη συμπύκνωση, τη σταθεροποίηση ή την αποτόνωση των υπερπιέσεων του ύδατος των πόρων. Ωστόσο, σε πολλές περιπτώσεις απαιτείται η βελτίωση εδάφους έναντι ρευστοποίησης υφιστάμενων κατασκευών. Σε αυτή την περίπτωση, οι συνήθεις τεχνικές βελτίωσης είναι δύσκολο ή αδύνατον να χρησιμοποιηθούν χωρίς συνέπειες στη λειτουργικότητά τους ή την πιθανότητα εμφάνισης δομικών αστοχιών κατά την εφαρμογή δυναμικών ή δονητικών τεχνικών. Η παθητική σταθεροποίηση αποτελεί μία νέα μη καταστροφική μέθοδο βελτίωσης του εδάφους θεμελίωσης υφιστάμενων κατασκευών για την αποτροπή του κινδύνου ρευστοποίησης, σύμφωνα με τη οποία εισάγεται ένας σταθεροποιητής μέσω διήθησης με χαμηλή υδραυλική κλίση στο ρευστοποιήσιμο έδαφος θεμελίωσης μιας υφιστάμενης κατασκευής. Ο σταθεροποιητής διαθέτει αρχικά χαμηλό ιξώδες, το οποίο μετά την πάροδο ελεγχόμενου χρόνου αυξάνεται ραγδαία, ώστε να σταθεροποιηθεί όταν έχει ολοκληρωθεί η διήθηση. Με αυτό τον τρόπο η βελτίωση του εδάφους δεν έχει τοπικό χαρακτήρα, ενώ ταυτόχρονα δεν οδηγεί σε όχληση της λειτουργίας της υπάρχουσας κατασκευής. Ο εμπλουτισμός του ύδατος των πόρων του ρευστοποιήσιμου εδάφους με τον σταθεροποιητή έχει ως αποτέλεσμα την αλλαγή της μηχανικής συμπεριφοράς του συστήματος εδαφικού σκελετού - ύδατος των πόρων του εδάφους, καθιστώντας το περισσότερο ανθεκτικό στη ρευστοποίηση. Η συγκεκριμένη μέθοδος μελετήθηκε πρώτη φορά από την Gallagher (2000) με τη χρήση κολλοειδούς οξειδίου του πυριτίου ως σταθεροποιητή. Πιο πρόσφατα ακόμη (DeJong et al., 2013 κ.α.), μελετήθηκε η σταθεροποίηση κοκκωδών εδαφών με χρήση βιοϋλικών και μικροβίων, με σκοπό τη δημιουργία δεσμών τσιμεντοποίησης μεταξύ των εδαφικών κόκκων και κατά συνέπεια τη διαμόρφωση τεχνητώς ελαφρώς τσιμεντοποιημένων αμμωδών εδαφών. Ο έλεγχος της αποτελεσματικότητας των τεχνικών βελτίωσης του εδάφους για την αποτροπή του κινδύνου ρευστοποίησης απαιτεί τη μελέτη της μηχανικής συμπεριφοράς των βελτιωμένων ρευστοποιήσιμων εδαφών υπό συνθήκες μονοτονικής και ανακυκλικής φόρτισης, καθώς και τον προσδιορισμό του μέγιστου μέτρου διάτμησής τους. Στα πλαίσια της παρούσας έρευνας, εφαρμόστηκε ένα εκτεταμένο πρόγραμμα εργαστηριακών δοκιμών, που αποτελείται κατά κύριο λόγο από τριαξονικές δοκιμές μονοτονικής και ανακυκλικής φόρτισης, καθώς και δοκιμές πιεζοηλεκτρικών στοιχείων, οι οποίες εκτελέστηκαν στην Τριαξονική Συσκευή Ανακυκλικής Φόρτισης του Εργαστηρίου Εδαφομηχανικής Θεμελιώσεων και Γεωτεχνικής Σεισμικής Μηχανικής (Ε.Ε.Θ.Γ.Σ.Μ.) του Αριστοτέλειου Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλονίκης. Σκοπός της παρούσας διατριβής είναι η διερεύνηση της μηχανικής συμπεριφοράς βελτιωμένων αμμωδών εδαφών. Για το λόγο αυτό, μελετάται η συμπεριφορά μη βελτιωμένων καθαρών και ιλυωδών άμμων, σταθεροποιημένων καθαρών και ιλυωδών άμμων με κολλοειδή πυριτία, καθώς και τσιμεντοποιημένων καθαρών και ιλυωδών άμμων, υπό μονοτονική και ανακυκλική φόρτιση και προσδιορίζεται το μέγιστο μέτρο διάτμησης των παραπάνω εδαφών. Η αποτελεσματικότητα των μελετηθέντων τεχνικών βελτίωσης εξετάζεται με σύγκριση των αποτελεσμάτων των βελτιωμένων και μη εδαφών.
