Micro-fabric characteristics and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating results are presented to discuss the controlling agents and timing of beachrock cementation on the fresh-water Iznik Lake shoreline. The beachrocks are made up of grain-supported polygenic conglomerate containing 20.42% carbonate with encrusted grains, basically as micrite coatings, isopachous aragonite rims, cryptocrystalline void fills and meniscus bridges. The optical ages of twelve samples yielded ages that range from 4.226±0.569 ka on the lowermost beds to 0.706±0.081 on the uppermost. This is the first report of precipitation of marine-like cements in Iznik Lake. The abundant aragonitedominated cement is likely indicative of precipitation-prone dry evaporative conditions from the climatic optimum to the last millennia.

Ho lo cene beachrocks in the Gulf of Aqaba are com posed of pre dom i nantly terrigenous ma te rial de rived from ero sion of ad ja cent up lifted Pre cam brian base ment, while the beachrocks in the Ara bian Gulf are com posed mainly of ma rine bioclasts and wind-blown siliciclastic sands. The ce ments of beachrocks in both ar eas show three tex tural va ri et ies: (1) isopachous phreatic acicular ar agon ite; (2) a micritic en ve lope of high-Mg cal cite (HMC); (3) meniscus and grav i ta tional vadose HMC. Ra dio car bon dat ing of beachrock sam ples from the Ara bian Gulf yielded ages from ca. 2300 to 660 yr cal BP whereas sam ples from the Gulf of Aqaba range in age be tween 5500 and 2800 yr cal BP. Ox y gen iso tope val ues range from 2.6 to 4.4‰ re spec tively for the Ara bian Gulf whereas the Gulf of Aqaba val ues range from 1.2 to 1.5‰. Car bon iso tope val ues range from 3.2 to 5.9‰ for the Ara bian Gulf whereas those from the Gulf of Aqaba range from 3.8 to 4.6‰. The val ues of d 18 O VPDB and d 13 C VPDB in the beachrocks of both ar eas sug gest a ma rine or i gin. The beachrocks of the Ara bian Gulf were pre cip i tated un der high evap o ra tion con di tions, while beachrocks from the Gulf of Aqaba were pre cip itated in nor mal shal low-ma rine con di tions. The min er al ogy and tex tural hab its sug gest that ce men ta tion of these beachrocks started within the shal low-ma rine phreatic zone.

In-situand laboratory Raman spectroscopic analysis on beachrock deposits: Characterisation of the trapped materials

Raman spectroscopy, including in-situ and laboratory analyses, were carried out in beachrock outcrops located in temperate latitude (Arrigunaga beach, Bilbao Estuary, North of Spain) to characterise the wide variety of sediments and wastes trapped within the cements. In the examined beachrocks (coastal sedimentary structures formed in the intertidal zone through the early precipitation of carbonates) the presence of abundant slag and anthropogenic wastes is noticeable. In-situ Raman analysis revealed the presence of cristobalite (SiO 2 ), tephroite (Mn 2 SiO 4 ), quartz (SiO 2 ), rhodonite (MnSiO 3 ), labradorite (Ca,Na)(Si,Al) 4 O 8 , hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ), gypsum (CaSO 4 ·2H 2 O) and amorphous carbon (C) as the main constituents in the trapped materials. Those were also identified off site together with other phases such as limonite (FeO(OH)·nH 2 O), lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH), arsenopyrite (FeAsS), fayalite (Fe 2 SiO 4 ) and anatase (TiO 2 ). As secondary compounds, portlandite (Ca(OH) 2 ), C-S-H (Ca 3 Si 2 O 7 ·3H 2 O), gypsum and possibly ettringite (3CaO·Al 2 O 3 ·3CaSO 4 ·32H 2 O) were identified only in-situ, and a possible evolution to the more stable thaumasite (3CaO·SiO 2 ·CO 2 ·SO 3 ·15H 2 O) was found in the laboratory analyses. Therefore, the applied methodology and specifically the in-situ Raman spectroscopy analyses resulted particularly valuable, allowing an accurate description of the trapped materials and the compounds formed by hydration and/or sulphate attack (probably from the high level of atmospheric aerosols coming from seawater or industrial activity nearby), giving an insight of the complexity of the examined outcrops.
