BackgroundFrankincense volatile oil (FVO) has long been considered a side product in pharmaceutical industry since frankincense of large molecular weight is the prime target. However, the volatile oil recycled in the extract process might contain a series of functional actives, serving as promising ingredients in the cosmetic field.MethodsGas chromatography‐mass spectrometer was utilized to determine the species and amount of active ingredients in FVO. Subsequently, zebrafish models were used to evaluate pigmentation inhibition, ROS elimination and neutrophil activation. In vitro DPPH test was also conducted to consolidate the anti‐oxidation efficacy. Based on the test results, network pharmacology was incorporated, where GO and KEGG enrichment analyses were performed to discover the interrelations between active ingredients.ResultsAbout 40 actives molecules were identified, including incensole, acetate incensole, and acetate incensole oxide. The FVO demonstrated great depigmentation activity by suppressing melanin synthesis, as well as providing free radical scavenging and anti‐inflammation effect. In network pharmacology analysis, 192 intersected targets were identified. By enrichment analysis and network construction, a series of whitening signal pathways, and hub genes, containing STAT3，MAPK3，MAPK1 were identified.ConclusionThe current study quantified the components of FVO, evaluated its efficacy in skin depigmentation, and give pioneering insights on the possible mechanism. The results confirmed that the FVO could serve as whitening agent in topical uses.

Boswellia serrata Roxb. ex Colebr. is a species belonging to the Burseraceae family, typical of dry environments of the Indian region. The oil-gum-resin, obtained from the trunk and thick branches, is known in phytotherapy for the volatile fraction which contains up to 70% terpenes. The most important and characteristic constituents are represented by pentacyclic triterpenes, named boswellic acids. B. serrata is known for multiple beneficial effects, mainly correlated to anti-inflammatory activity. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview on the activities and potential applications of B. serrata based on clinical and preclinical evidence. An up-to-date literature review of preclinical and clinical studies related to the applications of B. serrata preparations in different pathological conditions was conducted using the main databases of scientific literature. A body of evidence point out the role of B. serrata extracts and its active constituents in the treatment of several inflammatory diseases. In particular, clinical trials revealed its use as a topical remedy of skin diseases, such as eczema and psoriasis, and internally in the treatment of asthma, intestinal and osteoarticular inflammatory diseases. Preclinical findings highlighted the positive effects of B. serrata extracts in cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, and in cancer. Finally, B. serrata finds application as a feed additive in veterinary use. Although some limitations must be overcome, such as poor bioavailability, evidence supports that B. serrata is a promising medicinal plant. Furthermore, the use of B. serrata appears to have a favorable toxicological profile, but caution may be necessary regarding potential botanical-drug interactions.

F RANKINCENSE (Boswellia carterii) has many medicinal benefits. In Egypt, a few people like to use it in chewing and sometimes in incense. This study aimed to use the water extract of frankincense powder prepared by soaking in drinkable water for 24 hr (T1) and boiling in water for one hour (T2) for the fortification of guava nectar in concentrations ranging from 0.25 to 2% (volume/ volume (v/v)). The chemical composition, phenols, and flavonoids contents of the frankincense were determined. Anti-oxidant (DPPH method) and antimicrobials (pathogenic bacteria) and cytotoxicity (HepG-2 and MCF-7 human cancer cell lines) activities were measured. Sensory evaluation and the physical properties of the guava nectar mixed with water extracts of frankincense were evaluated. The phenols and total flavonoid contents of the T2 sample were 0.869 and 0.147 mg/g, respectively. However, it was 0.748 and 0.070 mg/g, respectively for T1. The results showed that frankincense powder has 93.74% antioxidant activity with 67.26 mg/ml IC 50 . The results also showed that the T2 sample has antibacterial activity against Salmonella typhi and Bacillus cereus. The results also showed that the frankincense powder has cytotoxic activity and this activity is strong on HepG-2 human cancer cell lines compared to the positive control (doxorubicin), however, it is less activity on the human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7). The IC 50 values of the frankincense powder were 7.8 and 33.9 µM, respectively, while doxorubicin values were 10.3 and 28.5 µM, respectively. The results of the sensory evaluation showed that water extracts of the frankincense can be added to guava nectar at concentrations up to1%. It can be concluded that it is possible to mix aqueous extracts of the frankincense with guava nectar to obtain a product with a pleasant taste, color, and aroma and having also the advantages of frankincense.
