Cellulose nanofibrils and silver nanoparticles enhances the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of polyvinyl alcohol nanocomposite film

Abstract: Recent findings of microplastics in marine food such as fish, crabs and shrimps necessitate the need to develop biodegradable packaging materials. This study reports on the development of a biodegradable packing material from cellulose nanofibril-polyvinyl alcohol nanocomposite embedded with silver nanoparticles. Microcrystalline cellulose was isolated from sugarcane bagasse via the kraft process followed by conversion of cellulose I to cellulose II using NaOH/urea/water solution. The nanofibrils were then iso… Show more

“…It can be observed that a nonuniform distribution of AgNPs is presented. This is in agreement with the previous article of Madivoli et al 19 Figure 1iii reports the mapping analysis allowing to investigate the elemental analysis of AgNPs. The blue color is typically due to the presence of AgNPs.…”

“…Typically, chitosan exhibits broad peaks centred at about 2θ = 18º and 32º attributed to the presence OH and NH2 groups which form stronger interactions that impart some degree of crystallinity. On the other hand, being a precursor of cellulose, HEC exhibits diffraction peaks that are typically observed in cellulose nanofibers at 2θ angles of 16º, 22º and 34º which have been attributed to the diffraction planes of ( 101) and (002) characteristic of cellulose I 43,56 . Chemical crosslinking CMCs and HEC with citric acid resulted in one peak centered at 2θ = 21 being observed with sharp peaks at 2θ values of 31º, 37º, 45º, 56º and 75º.…”

“…PVA nanocomposite films showed high degradation temperature (425°C) compared to the control PVA/PEG/PABA films (400°C) due to the presence of the AgNPs and their barrier properties against the diffusion of reactive species and thermal decomposition products within PVA matrices. On the other hand, Madivoli et al 132 examined how Ag functioned on (2,2,6,6‐Tetramethylpiperidin‐1‐yl) oxyl (TEMPO) oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNF) and PVA materials. The findings confirmed the formation of ionic bonds between the carboxylate present on the surface of CNF and the Ag + ion in the AgNO 3 solution to form AgNPs.…”
