Cellulose Nanofiber/Nanocrystal Reinforced Capsules: A Fast and Facile Approach Toward Assembly of Liquid-Core Capsules with High Mechanical Stability

Abstract: Liquid-core capsules of high mechanical stability open up for many solid state-like applications where functionality depending on liquid mobility is vital. Herein, a novel concept for fast and facile improvement of the mechanical properties of walls of liquid-core capsules is reported. By imitating nature's own way of enhancing the mechanical properties in liquid-core capsules, the parenchyma plant cells found in fruits and vegetables, a blend of short cellulose nanofibers (<1 μm, NFC) and nanocrystals (CNC) w… Show more

“…The length, width, and crystallinity of the CNs were 320 ± 119, 15 ± 3 nm, and 70%, respectively. Nanocelluloses have been reported to be highly effective in stabilizing oil droplets in water via interfacial absorption and the formation of dense interfacial networks . We used this advantage to generate hierarchical reinforcement of CNs in the acrylic plastic.…”

“…In particular, CNCs display many unique properties, such as high surface area, enhanced chemical reactivity, high mechanical durability, good optical properties along with renewability, biocompatibility and biodegradability, which provide considerable applications in drug delivery, food, gas barriers, and purification . Recently, CNCs were also used to stabilized emulsion had been reported by some researchers, for example, Kalashnikova et al . used cellulosic colloidal nanorods of different origins to investigate the effect of various elongated shapes adsorbed at the oil–water interface of Pickering emulsion, and also modulated the amphiphilic properties of the nanocrystals by changing the surface charge density to investigate two sources of cellulose: cotton linters and bacterial cellulose.…”
