Cellulose-g-poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethylmethacrylate) Hydrogels: Synthesis, Characterization, Antibacterial Testing and Polymer Electrolyte Application

Abstract: Hydrogels have been investigated due to their unique properties. These include high water content and biocompatibility. Here, hydrogels with different ratios of poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethylmethacrylate) (PDMAEMA) were grafted onto cellulose (Cel-g-PDMAEMA) by the free radical polymerization method and gamma-ray radiation was applied in order to increase crosslinking and content of PDMAEMA. Gamma irradiation enabled an increase of PDMAEMA content in hydrogels in case of higher ratio of 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl met… Show more

“…PDMAEMA-PEGDA hydrogels reached 100% conversion (Table , Figure S4) and exhibited swelling properties comparable to the other systems. In contrast to all other hydrogels, which retained a pink color owing to the presence of EY trapped within the 3D network, PDMAEMA-PEGDA hydrogels appeared yellow in color (Figure S6d), which is typically observed for PDMAEMA polymers. …”

“…The intense absorption band of ePTFE located at 1150–1210 cm –1 is ascribed to the –CF 2 asymmetric and symmetric bands, with a shoulder peak around 1240 cm –1 attributed to the C–C band. , These are the dominant peaks in both the virgin and modified ePTFE films. On the other hand, the DMAEMA monomer exhibits characteristic IR peaks, namely, those of C–N around 11450–1190 cm –1 , CH 2 bending at 1454 cm –1 , ,, CC at 1636 cm –1 , CO from the ester group observed at 1710–1740 cm –1 , , ,, the C–H of the ternary amine –N(CH 3 ) 2 at approximately 2771 and 2822 cm –1 , , and finally, the asymmetric vibration of CH 3 at about 2951–2972 cm –1 . Owing to the shared chemical composition of DMAEMA and TMAEMA, the majority of absorption peaks, such as C–N and CO, are also present in the FT-IR spectra of the TMAEMA monomer.…”

“…Furthermore, the polymer network stabilizes particles, thus avoiding the agglomeration of formed particles [72]. In our previous work, it was found that cel-DMAEMA hydrogels enable a reduction in Ag + ions, thus forming Ag particles, which contributed to the antibacterial properties of hydrogels [73]. Here, the influence of PDMAEMA content in hydrogels on the distribution and content of formed Ag particles was investigated in more detail.…”

“…In our previous work [73], the dissolution of cellulose was described. Briefly, cellulose was activated in DMAc at 120 • C for 2 h. The temperature was adjusted to 100 • C and then LiCl (6.6 wt% in DMAc/LiCl solution) was added.…”
