Cellulose fibrillation and interaction with psyllium seed husk heteroxylan

Abstract: Highlights: Flocculates of fibrillated cellulose is promoted by heating and centrifugation  Unheated mixtures can be described as binary phase dispersions  Heated mixtures form interpenetrating composites with psyllium husk heteroxylan  Psyllium husk heteroxylans weakly associate with (fibrillated) cellulose  Increased fibrillation leads to a denser or clumped structure of the mixtures

“…The particles were hairy due to the disordered chains, which became smoother due to further molecular ordering which was accompanied by a decrease in viscosity. As PSY restructures during cooling and self-association has been observed, 50,51 it might undergo a similar process as the formation of agar fluid gel with shearing in the RVA conditions. In the shearing field at the high temperature corresponding to the temperature range from peak 2 to trough, PSY associates and forms hairy weak gel particles, which interact with other particles or breakdown into smaller fragments.…”

“…In fact, the effect of 2% replacement by FC60 is similar to 10% replacement by FC0 shown as similar shear strains and viscosities plotted versus shear stress, and similar mechanical spectra and parameter A in the weak gel model. This could be explained by the higher water holding ability of FC60 due to fibrillation treatment (Agarwal, Hewson & Foster, 2018a;Ren, Linter & Foster, 2020). Additionally, an increase in fibre entanglement can also be expected as an outcome of fibrillation and FC60 appears as flocculates or aggregates (Ren et al, 2020).…”

“…Ren et al compared the ΔBS values at 20 °C and 80 °C. They concluded that heat can induce flocculation significantly [ 41 ]. Yang et al analyzed changes in backscattering profiles within 3 h to evaluate the stabilities of flavonoid glycoside or quercetin-containing emulsions.…”

“…A comparison of the TSI values of the emulsions within 19 h was carried out by Wang et al The TSI values decreased significantly when the PGPR (polyglycerol polyricinoleate) and casein gels were introduced into the aqueous phase [ 44 ]. The addition of fibrillated cellulose could also reduce Turbiscan stability index dose-dependently [ 41 ]. In our study, the TSI values of all groups increased continuously; especially the emulsion without any antioxidants.…”
