Cellular Receptors for Human Enterovirus Species A

Abstract: Human enterovirus species A (HEV-A) is one of the four species of HEV in the genus Enterovirus in the family Picornaviridae. Among HEV-A, coxsackievirus A16 (CVA16) and enterovirus 71 (EV71) are the major causative agents of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). Some other types of HEV-A are commonly associated with herpangina. Although HFMD and herpangina due to HEV-A are common febrile diseases among infants and children, EV71 can cause various neurological diseases, such as aseptic meningitis and fatal ence… Show more

“…The EV71 was often found in the older groups in the survivors, while the other EV was the major cause in the <2 years old group. This situation may be caused by the number of the receptors and the affinity of EV71 and other EV in the different age groups, along with the immune level . However, EV and EV71 have no difference between female and male cases among the survivors and deaths groups, different from Fischer et al .…”

“…EV71 isolates use at least two transmembrane proteins as receptors (reviewed in [17], [18]). Scavenger receptor class B, member 2 (SCARB2), originally identified as an EV71 receptor on rhabdomyosarcoma (RD) cells [14], is expressed on a broad variety of cell types.…”

“…SCARB2 not only facilitates the infection of EV71 but is also involved in virus internalization and the viral RNA uncoating of EV71 (16). Unlike SCARB2, PSGL-1 mediates the infection of some, but not all, EV71 strains or genotypes (7,17). In addition, PSGL-1 participates in EV71 virus binding but not virus entry and viral RNA release (16).…”
