Cellular myxoma of the vocal cord: a case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Myxomas are rare in the vocal cords. A 69-year-old man was admitted with one-year history of progressive dysphonia. Laryngoscopy revealed a polypoid mass on the right vocal cord. The diagnosis was cellular myxoma. A review of the literature including the present case revealed eleven reported cases of myxoma. Ten cases were classic myxoma. To the best of our knowledge, cellular myxoma has not been previously reported in the vocal cord. Hypercellularity does not affect the behavior of cellular myxoma. However, i… Show more

“…Histochemical stains like Congo red and crystal violet can be helpful in identifying the nature of the amorphous material. Myxoma has been rarely reported in the larynx, and it has characteristic stellate spindle cells embedded in an avascular, basophilic, gelatinouslike matrix [40,41]. Contact ulcer has an ulcerated and fibrin-coated surface and usually involves the posterior portion of the vocal folds.…”

“…Vocal cord (VC) is located in the larynx, right and left. Vocal cord paralysis (VCP) is a voice event that occurs when vocal cord superior (VCS) and vocal cord inferior (VCI) laryngeal nerves do not touch their vocal tracts in the glottic space during phonation [1]- [3]. VCP is generally evaluated in two main groups, one and two sides.…”

“…The purpose of the one-sided paralysis is to correct voice shortness while the bilateral goal is to correct breath shortness. Medialization technique, which was first applied by Isshiki, is the laryngeal frame surgeon [3]- [7]. In Ishiki's Type-I thyroplasty method, the thyroid cartilage opened a window in the lateral lamina, from which it placed a cylindrical block by medializing the paralytic cavity.…”
