Cellular localisation of tumour antigen (TA-4) in normal, dysplastic and neoplastic squamous epithelia of the upper aerodigestive tract

Abstract: Summary We report the use of tumour antigen (TA-4) polyclonal antiserum to assess the level and pattern of TA-4 antigen expression in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue sections from 110 patients with a range of normal, dysplastic and malignant squamous epithelia from various sites in the upper aerodigestive tract. There was a high degree of TA-4 antigen expression in the superficial layers of normal squamous epithelium and in well-differentiated squamous cell cancers (SCC). TA-4 expression was consistent… Show more

“…Several studies of SCC Ag levels in patients with different malignancies have demon strated that abnormal serum levels of this TAA appear mainly in tumors of squamous origin [8,13,[21][22][23][24]. In a previous study we showed that only 9.3% of 75 patients with nonepidermoid lung cancer had abnormal values for this tumor marker, in contrast to 58% in patients with epidermoid tumors [ 13].…”

“…As the worse the differentiation, the weaker the expression. SCCAg expression was consistently absent in poorly differentiated (11). It suggested that the main reason for the low expression of SCCAg may be that the cases of NPC we have studied were undifferentiated squamous cell carcinoma, although there were differences in paraffin samples and serum samples.…”

“…CTree technology had advantages that were simpler operation and easier to interpretation of the results than CART. Therefore, the CTree method was used in this study (11). The results of the decision tree form a flow chart which is closer to the clinical practice.…”

“…In fact, our preliminary data indicated that SCC antigen could inactivate the biologic activity of chymotrypin (Nawata et al, unpublished findings). SCC antigen is generally present in the cytoplasm of squamous cells, released outside the cell, but never detected at the cell membrance (12,13,15). Further studies should be needed to clarify where and how SCC antigen will take part in stratification of the epidermis.…”
