Cellular-based vehicle to pedestrian (V2P) adaptive communication for collision avoidance

Abstract: Road safety is one of the most important applications of vehicular networks. However, improving pedestrian safety via vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P) wireless communication has not been extensively addressed. In this paper, our vision is to propose a method which enables development of V2P road safety applications via wireless communication and only utilizing the existing infrastructure and devices. As pedestrians' smartphones do not support the IEEE 802.11p amendment which is customized for vehicular networking, … Show more

“…V2P was recently introduced to improve pedestrian safety by relying on either centralized [24] or distributed communication protocols [25]. Similar to our work [26], in this work pedestrians carry a communication system sending Pedestrianto-Vehicle (P2V) messages with geographic location, speed, walking direction and user type.…”

“…Sensory Observation Message (SOM) has been proposed as a method for sharing infrastructure sensor information primarily for the purpose of defending vulnerable road users [21]. [22] V2X-based cooperative protection systemfor vulnerable road users and its impact on traffic Cloud-based cooperative awareness between vehicles and pedestrians was proposed in [23]. Under this framework, pedestrians send their positions to the cloud regularly from their smartphones so that the cloud can alert vehicles to approaching pedestrians.…”
