Cellular Automata–Based Modeling and Simulation of a Mixed Traffic Flow of Manual and Automated Vehicles

Abstract: In recent years, automated vehicles have been developing rapidly, and some automated vehicles have begun to drive on highways. The market share of automated vehicles is expected to increase and will greatly affect traffic flow characteristics. This paper focuses on the mixed traffic flow of manual and automated vehicles. The study improves the existing cellular automaton model to capture the differences between manual vehicles and automated vehicles. Computer simulations are employed to analyze the characteris… Show more

“…Accordingly, there are many studies on CAVs using the CA traffic simulation model. To reflect different driving logics of different types of vehicles, different CA update rules were adopted for HDVs and CAVs [18][19][20]. Researchers have modeled mixed traffic flow with CA models by considering some important factors such as drivers' character differences, aggression levels of AVs, differentiated per-lane speed limit policy, and dedicated lane policy [21][22][23][24][25].…”

“…For the study of multi-lane traffic flow modeling, scholars mainly focus on the lanechanging rules. Based on the safe distance rule proposed by Gipps [54], Yang et al [55] developed a new lane change rule for mixed traffic. However, Gipps' lane-changing model ignores the differences of drivers, especially under different traffic conditions.…”

“…Many studies have been done on the characteristics of the heterogeneous flow consisting of AVs and HDVs on freeways [4], [5], and at intersections [6], [7]. However, in the context of AVs, few studies have been conducted focusing on bus stops, which are also a crucial component in urban road networks.…”
