Abstract:This chapter is a historical survey of antenna design techniques for cellular phones. Four generations of cellular antenna designs are analyzed with detailed design techniques, performance analysis, and comparisons: external antennas, internal microstrip patch antennas, planar monopole antennas, and active antennas. There is some discussion of potential future antenna technologies and in the conclusion, this chapter summarizes the antenna design parameters and isolation techniques for multiple antennas.
