Cellular and molecular pathology of gastric carcinoma and precursor lesions: A critical review

Abstract: Abstract:The cellular and molecular pathology of gastric cancer and its precursors are reviewed and discussed. Gastric carcinogenesis is a multistep phenomenon, beginning with precancerous conditions. Among these, adenoma is a direct precursor, because of the dysplastic nature of its cells. However, gastric adenoma is relatively rare. Chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is the most common precancerous condition, in which intestinal metaplasia often occurs. Carcinoma develops in CAG through stages of hyperplasia a… Show more

“…Intestinal-type GC is thought to develop from IM by transdifferentiation, whereas diffuse-type GC is derived from stem cell or the pit cell precursor (Ming, 1998;Yuasa, 2003). Therefore, genes specifically expressed in the diffuse-type may be expressed preferentially in the pit region among the three regions of the gastric mucosa.…”

“…25 Surprisingly, serrated adenomas have not been found in the aforementioned classifications of gastric adenomas. 26 One possibility is that gastric serrated adenomas have been classified together with gastric villous adenomas. Another possibility is that this type of lesion is very rare in the stomach.…”

“…Intestinal gastric carcinoma (IGCA) and diffuse (DGCA) forms are the two main morphological types of gastric carcinoma (GCA) [1][2][3]. These tumor types diverge in many demographic and clinical characteristics [4,5].…”
