Cell-to-Cell Communication During Plant-Pathogen Interaction

Abstract: Recognition of pathogen activates cellular signaling such as ROS, MAPK, Ca2+ signaling which ultimately fine-tunes the cell to cell communication. These further coordinates with the hormone signaling to execute the defense response at local and systemic level. Interestingly, phytopathogens have also evolved to manipulate the cellular and hormonal signaling and/or exploit hosts cell to cell connection in multiple ways at multiple levels. Overall, the triumph over the pathogen depends on prime decisions and acti… Show more

“…Plants are continuously challenged by diverse pathogens and have evolved a two-tiered immunity system, namely pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) and effector-triggered immunity (ETI) ( Tabassum and Blilou, 2022 ; Ngou et al., 2022 ). At PTI stage, the pathogen recognized by the plant activates a complex network of signaling pathways such as reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), Ca 2+ pathways, and hormone signaling that constitute the plant’s basal defense response ( Tabassum and Blilou, 2022 ). Salicylic acid (SA) biosynthesis and SA-mediated signaling pathway play a key role in plants for establishment of resistance to many pathogens ( Ding and Ding, 2020 ).…”

“…Most plant viruses spread within their hosts by a bimodal process, i.e., by local and systemic movement. Local infection is mediated by cell-to-cell movement, in which the virus moves from the infected to healthy cells through plasmodesmata (PD), the plant intercellular connections ( Tabassum and Blilou, 2022 ). Once the local infection reaches the plant vascular system, systemic movement ensues to spread the viral infection to distant plant tissues ( Kappagantu et al., 2020 ).…”
