Cell Surface Xyloglucan Recognition and Hydrolysis by the Human Gut Commensal Bacteroides uniformis

Abstract: Xyloglucan (XyG) is a ubiquitous plant cell wall hemicellulose that is targeted by a range of syntenic, microheterogeneous xyloglucan utilization loci (XyGUL) in Bacteroidetes species of the human gut microbiota (HGM), including Bacteroides ovatus and B. uniformis . Comprehensive biochemical and biophysical analyses have identified key differences in the protein complements of each locus that confer differential access to structurally-diverse XyG sidechain varian… Show more

“…Bacteroides uniformis was detected in 11 patients of whom 4 suffered complications. It is part of the human gut microbia ( Grondin et al., 2022 ) and is thought to have anti-obesity effects. Although being described as a pathogen in human appendices more than 40 years ago, B. uniformis is very rarely mentioned in literature in regards of appendicitis ( Elhag et al., 1986 ).…”

“…The higher abundance of Bacteroides vulgatus in the group CLW may be related to the high-protein and high-fat food composition of wild wolves. A variety of bacteria in genus Bacteroides are related to the metabolism of carbohydrate and polysaccharide (Hyun et al, 2012;Grondin et al, 2022). While observing higher Heat map showed the difference in functional abundance of groups CLW, CLC and CLF annotated at KEGG level 2. abundance of some species of genus Bacteroides in the intestinal microbiota of wild wolves, higher abundance in some other species of genus Bacteroides in the domestic dog and captive wolves were also observed.…”

“…It is worth noting that the single row of Bacteroides uniformis was significantly enriched in this study and could be considered as a biomarker strain produced by the addition of the DHF. A recent study revealed a significant enrichment of carbohydrate-active enzymes in the genome of Bacteroides uniformis , which encodes a specific protein conferring the ability to degrade a wide range of glycans and possessing multiple glycosidase activities [ 68 ]. Surprisingly, this provides strong theoretical support for the utilization of herbal medicines by Bacteroides uniformis .…”
