Cell surface hydrophobicity: a key component in the degradation of polyethylene succinate byPseudomonassp. AKS2

Abstract: Aim: Polyethylene succinate (PES) contains hydrolysable ester bonds that make it a potential substitute for polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). Towards bioremediation of PES, we have already reported that a new strain of Pseudomonas, Pseudomonas sp. AKS2, can efficiently degrade PES and hypothesized that cell surface hydrophobicity plays an important role in this degradation process. In this study, our efforts were targeted towards establishing a correlation between cell surface hydrophobicity and PES de… Show more

“…The procedures of PA03 biofilm protein extraction were described previously with a few modifications [31]. Briefly, the preformed PA03 biofilms were incubated with or without AZM and BER alone and in combination at 1/2×MIC, 1×MIC and 2×MIC at 37°C for 24 h. After incubations, the biofilms were washed gently by sterile PBS to remove planktonic cells and adhered loosely cells.…”

“…Pseudomonas sp. AKS2 cell surface hydrophobicity is important to the interaction between the cell and hydrophobic surface of polyethylene succinate (Liu et al 2012;Qiu et al 2003;Tribedi and Sil 2013b). Biostimulation (in situ bioremediation) has constructive effects on PESu degradation by establishing a new community and shows a founder effect (Tribedi and Sil 2013c).…”
