“…Because it is a non‐invasive method of immune evaluation, FCM has been shown to be a useful tool for studying cell populations in saliva samples 7,8,20 . The technique can therefore be used to evaluate various pathologic conditions of the oral cavity that could interfere with the distribution of leukocytes.…”

“…FCM staining was carried out following the procedure described elsewhere 8 . Five hundred microliters of PBS, pH 7.0, was added to the saliva samples obtained as described above and then centrifuged at 2,000 rpm for 5 minutes at 4°C to remove mucus.…”

“…Using qRT‐PCR and fluorescence microscopy, the present study demonstrates that more than half of the oral neutrophils displayed TCRαβ expression. This might explain the overestimation of number of T cells present in saliva of healthy patients by other groups because the T cells they are counting are likely to be neutrophils 16,21,22 . The exact role of TCR expression in oral neutrophils remains to be determined, but the increased recruitment of additional TCR‐expressing neutrophils to the site of inflammation suggests that neutrophils not only are responsible for the initial innate immune response but may also be involved in the crosstalk between the innate and adaptive immune systems.…”
