Cell-material interaction

Abstract: Abstract:The interaction of cells with material surfaces is of fundamental relevance and contributes to the clinical success of implants. Cells sense their physico-chemical environment resulting in focal adhesion reorganization, spatio-temporal localization and activation of integrin dependent signalling proteins as well as phenotypic changes, e.g., of the actin cytoskeleton. The technology of designing instructive biomaterials involves chemical modifications by grafting of chemical groups, adhesion ligands an… Show more

“…The literature postulates that physico-chemical surface characteristics such as roughness and wettability influence cell adhesion, spreading, proliferation, and differentiation [2,3,9,35]. Raimbault et al [21] pointed out that cell behavior is not necessarily positively modulated by hydrophilic surfaces, which is in accordance with our observations.…”

“…The modification and optimization of the surface properties of implants with a focus on cell adhesion was investigated by many research groups [1,2,3,4]. Titanium and titanium alloys are widely used as biomaterial for implants due to their high biocompatibility [5,6].…”

“…Studies indicate that cells perceive chemical and mechanical cues through chemo‐ and mechano‐sensitive molecules at the cell membrane, including integrins and stretch‐activated ion channels. That leads to focal adhesion which initiates signal transduction resulting in biological responses of the cell, such as adhesion, proliferation, differentiation, and migration . Even though such a general mechanism, the underlying molecular mechanism of mechanotransduction or chemical signaling still very much unknown.…”

“…The surfaces of biomaterials play a central role in the modulation of cell behavior [42,43] and in mechanotransduction [7,44,45]. Topographical features have an influence on direct transmission of force, which causes a reorganization of the cytoskeleton [31,[46][47][48] and changes in cell shape to adapt to the underlying surface [44,49,50].…”
