Cell division: control of the chromosomal passenger complex in time and space

Abstract: The ultimate goal of cell division is equal transmission of the duplicated genome to two new daughter cells. Multiple surveillance systems exist that monitor proper execution of the cell division program and as such ensure stability of our genome. One widely studied protein complex essential for proper chromosome segregation and execution of cytoplasmic division (cytokinesis) is the chromosomal passenger complex (CPC). This highly conserved complex consists of Borealin, Survivin, INCENP, and Aurora B kinase, a… Show more

“…Immunohistological findings showing that survivin expression was higher in cortical than in medullary human thymocytes were consistent with flow cytometry findings showing that survivin expression was upregulated in DP but downregulated in SP mouse thymocytes [32,94]. The aforementioned results are in keeping with evidence that survivin is crucial for mitotic progression [95].…”

“…5 AURORA B along with 3 other proteins, SURVIVIN, BOREALIN and INCENP form the chromosome passenger complex (CPC). 4,15 Our results so far have shown that MAD2 ablation results in the reduced phosphorylation of histone H3. In order to identify the role of MAD2 in the regulation of mitotic localization of AURORA B, we silenced MAD2 in different cell lines and studied AURORA B localization using immunofluorescence analysis.…”

“…The mechanism by which the CPC is recruited to the centromere consists of various feedback loops among the CPC components, phosphorylation of histones H3 and H2A, and multiple mitotic kinases, including Haspin, Aurora B, Plk1, Bub1, and CDK1. Recent reviews discuss this topic in detail (Carmena et al 2012;van der Horst and Lens 2014;Krenn and Musacchio 2015;Kitagawa and Lee 2015).…”
