Cell death and the mechanisms of it are an increasing interest of researchers worldwide. This is best reflected by the number of scientific articles on cell death over the last 3 years (2017-2019), which increased by 64% as compared to the 3 years before (2014-2016) from 57,000 to 93,500 articles. Reports on apoptosis, necroptosis and ferroptosis are in the lead of these numbers. It is clear that this interest in programmed cell death is based on the fact that knowledge on this subject provides insight in biology in general, as well as in the processes of disease and resulting opportunities for therapeutic intervention.
