Cell death in disease: from 2010 onwards

Abstract: The strong interest in cell death, and the shift in emphasis from basic mechanisms to translational aspects fostered the launch last year of the new sister journal of Cell Death and Differentiation, named Cell Death and Disease, to reflect its stronger focus towards clinical applications. Here, we review that first year of activity, which reflects an enthusiastic response by the scientific community. On the basis of this, we now launch two novel initiatives, the start of a new section dedicated to cancer metab… Show more

“…Indeed, PCD is fundamental for many processes, including: embryogenesis, tissue homeostasis, and immune and stress response. 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 Therefore it has been assumed that PCD had emerged with multicellularity, being absent in unicellular organisms. 3 , 5 , 6 However, it is now clear that PCD also occurs in unicellular eukaryotes and bacteria and is therefore present in all life kingdoms.…”

“…Even though it feels like just a few months ago, CDDIS was actually launched in 2010, meaning we are now almost at the ends its 4th year of publication. 1 Moreover, in a felicitous conjunction, this coincides with publishing our 1000th paper. This is a remarkable achievement and bears witness to the trust the scientific community places in our journals.…”

“…This phenomenon of orchestrated cell demise is required by multicellular life forms for the sculpting of organs (such as interdigital regions in mammalian limbs; Jacobson et al , 1997 ), removal of undesirable structures (as in the metamorphosis of tadpoles; Nishikawa and Hayashi, 1995 ; Jiang et al , 1997 ), elimination of unhealthy or noxious cells ( Cohen, 1991 ; Ju et al , 1995 ; Asplund-Samuelsson et al , 2012 ), and control of cell number, which pay off as enhanced overall fitness of the organism. Besides, the significance of PCD in stress and immune responses is also well recognized ( Ameisen, 2002 ; Knight and Melino, 2011 ; Favaloro et al , 2012 ; Green and Levine, 2014 ; Allocati et al , 2015 ). As with animals, cell death is essential for plants as the process is involved in growth, differentiation, and stress responses.…”
