Cell–cell communication during collective migration

Abstract: Cell motility plays a critical role in many biological and medical processes, including wound healing, morphogenesis, and cancer metastasis (1). Often, this movement is guided by external chemical cues in the form of chemoattractant gradients. These cues consist of diffusive chemoattractant molecules that bind to surface receptors on the cell membrane and activate intracellular signaling pathways, resulting in a polarized asymmetric cell that chemotaxes in the direction of higher chemoattractant concentrations… Show more

“…How cells induce group polarity to form directional protrusions is a long-standing and intensively studied question in collective cell migration. In particular, which molecular mechanism induces individual cells to compete for the leading position or to communicate with other members of the migratory cluster has yet to be established (Cai et al, 2014; Ellison et al, 2016; Ramel et al, 2013; Rappel, 2016; Xiang et al, 2016). Our finding that a Rap1 and Hpo complex polarizes actin protrusion provides a mechanism underlying group polarity in collective cell migration.…”

“…Combining the two approaches could lead to a deeper understanding of collective chemotaxis [54]. A current modelling study shows that an external chemoattractant may induce collective NC chemotaxis by enhancing the effect of CIL-induced polarity in a CoA-CIL type model [55].…”

“…Collective behavior of microorganisms is often achieved by the emission and detection of extracellular signaling molecules which regulates their motility 1–3 . One of the most intensively studied examples of such biochemical communication are amoebae, e.g.…”
