Celiac Disease in a Child With Ulcerative Colitis

Abstract: Celiac disease and Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease are both immune-mediated enteropathies. It is rare for both celiac disease and IBD to occur together in an individual patient. This association has been reported in adults, but very rarely in children. “…In our study, CD was more common than UC in a cohort of IBD patients. In contrast to our results, CeD were reported more frequently to be associated with UC than CD [ 10 , 17 – 19 ]. Moreover, two further studies reported high prevalence of UC even among the first-degree relatives of patients with CeD [ 20 , 21 ].…”

“…These shared genetic pathways may be the reason for their possible comorbidity. Similarly, a clinical presentation described by Cheng et al was found to be in line with a meta-analysis of genome-wide association study datasets comprising case reports of CeD and IBD comorbidity in Caucasian children from Europe [12,13].…”

“…Duodenitis in 7% of children was associated with features of functional dyspepsia and functional abdominal pain. Interestingly, there was one patient with concomitant ulcerative colitis and celiac disease who has been described before by us as a case report (4). This patient was classified as a celiac disease patient.…”
