An extended stochastic Petri net approach to modelling and simulation of construction systems is developed. The basics of Petri nets, a technique previously used for modelling computer systems and automated manufacturing, are described. Extended stochastic Petri net features useful in construction systems modelling are detailed along with structures that can represent characteristics commonly present in construction systems.Two illustrative examples are presented and the advantages and disadvantages of extended stochastic Petri nets as a tool for construction system rr~odelling are discussed.

Wu (2005) Modelling and simulation of an intelligent flexible manufacturing system via high-level object Petri nets A dynamic model of a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is considered based on the information characteristics of system infrastructure. According to the physical architecture and working requirements, a software framework for FMS modelling and simulation is proposed to describe the parallel flow of different work-pieces in the shop. The model is based mainly on the concepts of both object-oriented programming and high-level Petri net methods. A material transportation protocol is designed to realize the respective processing of routine orders of work-pieces within the main resources of the FMS shop. Using a specially designed protocol, a fully automated job shop FMS can be achieved. An FMS simulation tool that can show the dynamic process of all the system resources during task execution is finally introduced.

Configuration flexibility and deadlock-free operation are two essential properties of control systems for highly automated flexible manufacturing systems. Configuration flexibility, the ability to quickly modify manufacturing system components and their logical relationships, requires automatic generation of control executables from high level system specifications. These control executables must guarantee deadlock-free operation. The resource order policy is a configurable controller that provides the deadlock-free guarantee for buffer space allocation. It uses a total ordering of system machines and routing information to generate a set of configuration specific linear constraints. These constraints encode the system state along with a buffer capacity function and define a deadlock-free region of operation. Constraint generation and execution are of polynomial complexity.Index Terms-Deadlock avoidance, discrete event systems, flexible manufacturing.
