“…When comparing the pre-event 30day period to the 30-day period following the press releases, 14 out of 15 of the relevant search terms had lower search volumes ( Table 1). This demonstrated decrease in public interest may point to an enduring rather than a temporary phenomenon, as several previous studies in surgical literature suggest that early trends detected by GT can anticipate acutely developing patterns before they prove to be long-term [9][10]. Signs of pronounced, persistent decreases in GT search volumes may already be emerging for the search terms ACL reconstruction, ACL replacement, hip replacement, knee arthroplasty, total knee arthroplasty, rotator cuff repair, and rotator cuff surgery, where there were significant decreases in public interest when comparing mean search volumes from January 2015 -February 2020 to search volumes from March 2020 -May 2020 ( Figures 6-10).…”

“…In addition to the official recommendations provided by CMS and AAOS, there has also been consistent high-profile press coverage regarding the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on elective medical procedures, with the United States Surgeon General using Twitter, television appearances, and official press briefings to urge hospital systems to delay elective procedures [7]. Recent reports on a variety of surgical elective procedures indicate that this high-profile press coverage significantly impacts healthcare resource utilization by the public [8][9][10].…”

“…As shown by previous evidence, web queries may be influenced by other variables not included in our study. News regarding celebrities may have a significant impact on the public opinion, with a consequent increase in web search volumes [19,75,76]. Moreover, global initiatives to raise awareness on medical conditions may influence Internet search query activity [77] and, in the specific case of low back pain, we can't exclude that World Spine Day taking place every year on 16 October might have contributed to the increase in interest observed in early winter.…”

“…Peak public interest in [‘Oesophageal Cancer’], [‘Pancreatic Cancer’] and [‘Lung Cancer’] was all related to either a celebrity diagnosis or a celebrity death. Tijerina et al [ 19 ] reported that celebrity announcements by Angelina Jolie, Kylie Jenner and Caitlyn Jenner resulted in greatly increased Google search volumes about their respective procedures following their public announcements about prophylactic mastectomy, lip augmentation and gender affirming surgery. Our results suggest that in addition to planned awareness campaigns, spontaneous celebrity announcements often increase Google traffic related to various cancers and may provide an excellent opportunity to both fundraise and provide awareness about screening protocols for the cancer of interest.…”

“…Previously, GT has successfully been used in epidemiological studies examining public health issues ranging from Zika to Lyme disease to vesicular stomatitis to Ebola to cancer screening [14][15][16][17][18]. GT data has also been used to assess changes in public interest in health-related topics in response to widespread media coverage [19,20]. The purpose of this study is to use GT to evaluate the impact of monthly cancer awareness campaigns and other high-profile media events on public interest in several different malignancies.…”
