Cecal Volvulus Post Cesarean Section: A Case Report

Abstract: Cecal volvulus is a very rare cause of large bowel obstruction (LBO) that develops when a part of the bowel twists around the mesentery. Cases of acute abdomen, regardless of age, race, and ethnicity, should be examined to exclude volvulus from differential diagnoses. Surgery is the only confirmatory method to diagnose and treat this life-threatening condition. Here, we report a case of a 35-year-old female patient who presented with abdominal pain, distension, constipation, and vomiting. Abdominal computed to… Show more

“…First mentioned in 1899, cecal bascule is the rarest form of cecal volvulus, described mostly through case reports in the literature and one systematic review [2] . In the context of obstetrics and gynecology, it has mostly been mentioned perioperatively after cesarean [3] , [9] , [10] , but was also reported in an antepartum patient [4] . It usually occurs in patients with redundant or mobile cecum, which is a result of incomplete fixation of the cecum to the retroperitoneum during embryogenesis [5] , [6] .…”

“…Most cecal bascule reports found in the literature are case reports ( Table 1 ). There have been a few reports of cecal bascule after c-section [3] , [9] , [10] . During a c-section, the uterus can be exteriorized to facilitate additional procedures, control of bleeding, and hysterotomy closure.…”

“…Regardless of the type of volvulus, fast diagnosis and treatment are of great importance to avoid necrosis and bowel perforation. Very few reports exist of CV in the days following a CS 7–9. Larger studies on this specific population do not exist due to the rarity of this complication, so risk factors and long-term outcomes have not been investigated.…”
