CDC Redberry lentil

Abstract: CDC Redberry is a high-yielding, red cotyledon lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) cultivar developed by the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It has gray seed coat colour, suitable for the red market class of lentil. It is intended for cultivation in all lentil growing areas of western Canada. CDC Redberry was issued registration No.5771 on 2003 Dec. 19 by the Variety Section, Plant Products Division, Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Key words: Lentil, cultivar descripti… Show more

“…CDC Redberry [41] was used as the reference genome since it was the first small red lentil cultivar to combine resistance to both ascochyta blight and anthracnose, excellent lodging tolerance and high yield. It has a diverse genetic origin and has been a key genotype in the Canadian red lentil breeding program since 2005.…”

“…Cooper has a 67‐cm vine length and is a semi‐leafless pea with green cotyledons and a seed weight of 271 mg seed −1 (Canadian Food Inspection Agency, 2005). Morton has an upright growth habit that averages 31 cm tall, a beige seed coat with red cotyledons, and seeds that are small with a seed weight of 33 mg seed −1 (Muehlbauer and McPhee, 2007), while CDC Redberry has a plant height of 34 cm, a gray seed coat with red cotyledons, and seeds that are large with a seed weight of 45 mg seed −1 (Vandenberg et al, 2006).…”

“…This line was crossed with CDC Redberry, which is partially resistant to Ct , and with the susceptible line Eston to generate introgression populations. CDC Redberry is a red cotyledon, gray seed coat, small seeded, high yielding cultivar released in 2004 (Vandenberg et al, 2006) and Eston is a small seeded, yellow cotyledon, green seed coat, early maturing cultivar released in Canada in 1980 (Slinkard, 1981).…”

“…Ct has two distinct races: Ct1 and the more virulent Ct0. Resistance to race Ct1 has been documented in 16 lines of Lcc (Buchwaldt et al, 2004) and has been effectively transferred into cultivars including ‘CDC Redberry’ (Vandenberg et al, 2006). Resistance to race Ct1 is conferred by one major gene in accession PI320937 (Buchwaldt et al, 2001; Tullu et al, 2003) and PI345629 and a single recessive gene controls resistance in ‘Indianhead’ (Buchwaldt et al, 2001).…”
