CdBiO2Cl: synthesis and powder structure solution

Abstract: The title compound, cadmium bismuth dioxide chloride, CdBiO2Cl, was obtained as a white powder by reaction of solid BiOCl with CdO at 973 K. Ab initio crystal structure determination was carried out using X-ray powder diffraction techniques, including direct methods for atom location and Rietveld fitting for the final refinement. Being monoclinic, the crystal structure can be related to tetragonal Sillen layered phases. The main structural elements present are CdBiO2+ pleated metal-oxygen layers alternating wi… Show more

“…After incorporation of other but compatible structural blocks, a diversity of ordered modular structures have been isolated and reported. Their sequences give rise to ideal tetragonal structures with a ≈ 3.9 Å (i.e., √2/2a(fluorite)) and c varying from 6 to 50 Å depending on the structural complexity. The title Sillen phases , consist of [(A,Bi) 2 O 2 ] layers intergrown with single [X 1 ], double [X 2 ] or triple [M′ x X 3 ] halide layers, where X represents halide atoms. It produces the rather simple structures of A BiO 2 Cl (X1-type) (A 2+ = Cd, Ca, Pb, etc.…”

“…1b. The structure shows a layered configuration [28] It is attributed to the stereochemically active Bi 6s 2 lone electron pairs. As stated above, the Cd 2+ ion is sited at a spatial position similar to Bi 3+ , thus, it also has a seven-coordination environment, with four Cd-O bond distances from 2.2010Å to 2.4531Å, one Cd-Cl bond distance at 2.4877Å and another two Cd-Cl bond distances at the same value of 3.3483Å.…”

“…Many high‐temperature chloride conductors exist already and substantial progress has been made in recent decades . Nevertheless, few chloride conductors based on polymers have been reported, such as plasticized quaternary ammonium polymers where poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) is used as a fast anion conductor.…”
