CD57, a marker for B-cell activation and splenic ellipsoid-associated reticular cells of the chicken

Abstract: We have demonstrated that the ellipsoid-associated reticular cells of chicken spleen express CD57, a marker for B-cell activation. These cells are characterised by their spindle-shaped morphology, tissue distribution and the absence of certain leucocyte-specific markers. They are phagocytotic and possess high endogenous non-specific esterase activity. Previous reports failed to detect CD57 expression on ellipsoid-associated reticular cells, probably because the tissue sections were differently treated before i… Show more

“…Supporting cells sometimes showed phagocytic and migratory activity (Olah et al, 1985). In addition, supporting cells were blood-borne cells and play an important role in the production of extracellular matrix (Jeurissen, 1993; Mast & Goddeeris, 1997; Nagy et al, 2005).…”

“…Both cell types express CD45 hemopoietic antigens suggesting they are of blood‐born origin. The ellipsoid‐associated macrophages also express 74.2 and KULO1 monocyte‐macrophage–specific antigens (Jeurissen et al, 1992; Jeurissen, 1993; Mast and Goddeeris, 1998). After phagocytosis, the macrophages detach from the surface of the sheath and migrate through the periellipsoidal white pulp to the PALS (Oláh and Glick, 1982; Gallego et al, 1993).…”

“…This proliferative defect had been shown in all lymphocyte subsets, which express CD57 (CD4 ϩ and CD8 ϩ T lymphocytes and NK cells) and with some relevant exception [25], was not overcome by addition of IL-2 or IL-15. Despite neural crest and T-lineage restriction, in chickens, CD57 is considered as a B cell activation marker for bursal lymphocytes [26].…”
