Cd4 + T Cell Matters in Tumor Immunity

Abstract: CD4+ T cells have been shown to be able to affect tumor growth through both direct and indirect means. In addition, a requirement has been demonstrated for CD4+ T cells in the regulation and induction of T cell memory, and CD4+ suppressor T cells have been identified, stressing a role for CD4+ T cells in the induction and maintenance of antitumor immune responses. A review of the involvement of CD4+ T cells at different stages of tumor immunity is provided, and based on these data we discuss how CD4+ T cell re… Show more

“…Accordingly, the clinical utility of candidate vaccine antigens has typically been evaluated in part by examining the presence of antigen-specific CD8 T cells in the peripheral blood. There is increasing evidence to suggest that antigen-specific CD4 T cell responses are also important to induce effective and sustained antitumor responses [26]. In preliminary experiments, we have been able to detect the presence of CD4 T cells that recognize prostein-derived epitopes in PBMC of healthy individuals, further supporting the development of prostein in vaccine-based immunotherapy strategies for prostate cancer.…”

“…The cytolytic activity of CD8 + T cells exerts a direct anti-tumor eVect [66]. CD4 + T cells participate through the activation and maintenance of CD8 + T cells and the recruitment of inXammatory cells such as macrophages, granulocytes, natural killer (NK) cells, and B cells [24,47,51,93,131].…”
