CD23 Expression in Mantle Cell Lymphoma: Clinicopathologic Features of 18 Cases

Abstract: The distinction between small lymphocytic lymphoma/chronic lymphocytic leukemia (SLL/CLL) and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) has important clinical implications. Typically, SLL/CLL is CD23+, whereas MCL is CD23-. However, CD23 is expressed in a subset of MCLs, and the clinicopathologic features of patients with these neoplasms are not well described. We report 18 CD23+ MCLs, detected by flow cytometry in all cases (dim intensity, 16; bright intensity, 2), 5 (28%), also positive by immunohistochemical analysis. The… Show more

“…23 On the other hand, CD5 and CD43 expression, a common feature of MCL and CLL may also occur in MZL. 24 Finally, although CD10 or BCL-6 have not been detected in cyclin D1-negative MCL some conventional MCL may express these germinal center markers.…”

“…However, biologic heterogeneity includes rare CD23 Ϫ cases of CLL, whereas CD23 positivity in MCL is not uncommon. [26][27][37][38] In our test and validation cohorts, 13 of 42 (31%) cases of MCL in leukemic phase were CD23 ϩ , whereas 5 MCL cases in the test cohort had a mini-CLL score of 3. The diagnostic discriminant was useful in such cases with an atypical immunophenotype by combining the information from the CD160FCA on the mini-CLL score and the level of CD23 expression ( Figure 5C).…”

“…Although MCL is typically CD23 Ϫ , in the test cohort, 11 of 34 (32%) cases of MCL expressed CD23 (with all cases were confirmed to be MCL by G banding, FISH, and/or histology), which is similar to other reports. 26,27 In contrast, 598 of 600 ( Ͼ 99%) cases of CLL were CD23 ϩ . Because the percentage of CD23 positivity in MCL was lower than that in CLL, we investigated the ratio of the percentage of CD23 to CD5 expression on the malignant B cells (referred to as CD23r) as a parameter to differentiate CLL from CD23 ϩ MCL.…”

“…The cell-surface phenotype of the DTG tumors is consistent with MCL-BV. 9,11,47,48 One of the characteristics of MCL-BV is the expression of bcl-1/cyclin D1. 5,9,49 We evaluated cyclin D1 expression in the tumors of the IL-14␣ TG, c-myc TG, and DTG mice.…”
