CCS in the North Sea region: A comparison on the cost-effectiveness of storing CO2 in the Utsira formation at regional and national scales

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe potential scale of carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) under long-term decarbonisation scenarios means that analysis on the contribution of large international CO 2 storage reservoirs is critical. This paper compares the potentially key role of CCS within cost-optimizing energy systems modelling at the national level (ensuring country-specific technical, economic and policy detail), and the regional level (ensuring transboundary electricity and CO 2 trade). Analysis at alternate model s… Show more

“…The study area at Panarea is in shallower water (12.5 m) than sites normally considered for CCS across the Global Ocean (e.g., [55,56,57,58,59,60,61]), which are in deeper shelf seas. We can still apply the passive acoustic techniques developed here for bubble detection and quantification in deeper water.…”

“…For large-scale CCUS implementation, it is critical to optimally integrate capture, compression, transportation, utilization and sequestration activities. Although CO 2 management using CO 2 capture and sequestration infrastructure has been considered, these studies did not include utilization opportunities (Tan et al, 2013;Kazmierczak et al, 2009;Johnson and Ogden, 2011;Zheng et al, 2010;van den Broek et al, 2009;Brunsvold et al, 2011;Fimbres Weihs et al, 2011;Svensson et al, 2004;Van den Broek et al, 2010;Strachan et al, 2011;Bakken et al, 2008;Middleton et al, 2012;Alhajaj et al, 2013).…”

“…For instance, analyzing the NATCARB data (National Energy Technology and Laboratory, 2010a), we have screened 161 CO 2 -EOR sites as potential utilization locations ( Finally, while studies (Odenberger et al, 2008;Kjärstad et al, 2011;Mikunda et al, 2011;Klokk et al, 2010;Strachan et al, 2011;Bakken et al, 2008;Middleton and Bielicki, 2009b;Middleton et al, 2012;Kuby et al, 2011;Han and Lee, 2011;Han et al, 2012;Tan et al, 2012;van den Broek et al, 2008;Zheng et al, 2010;Johnson and Ogden, 2011;Figueroa et al, 2008) addressed regional CO 2 capture and sequestration and CO 2 pipeline networks (Morbee Fig. 5.…”
