CBCT in Advanced Dental Education: A Survey of U.S. Postdoctoral Periodontics Programs

Abstract: Historically, predoctoral and advanced dental education programs used two-dimensional panoramic and periapical radiographs for implant planning. Three-dimensional (3D) Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging has improved this study was to assess how U.S. postdoctoral periodontics programs have incorporated CBCT technology into their curricula. A ten-question survey was sent to all 57 U.S. postdoctoral periodontics programs in November-December 2018. Thirty-seven responses were received, for a 65% response… Show more

“…In the present study, the identification of the anatomical dental details by CBCT software can be considered a limitation of this technological tool (Buchanan et al, 2017;Beals et al, 2020). The resolution of details in CT images is related to the exposure parameters of the CT scan; thus, the exposure parameters were the ones protocolled by the institution for clinical practice.…”

“…Koristi se u endodonciji za određivanje morfologije i dimenzija kanala korena, periapikalnih lezija, otkrivanje i lokalizaciju resorpcija, za postoperativnu kontrolu i praćenje ishoda terapije. Primenu je našao i u ortodontskoj terapiji, kao i u implantoprotetici, budući da olakšava protetsko planiranje, izbor implantata i mesta njegove ugradnje [1,2,3].…”

“…It is used in endodontics to determine the morphology and dimensions of root canals, periapical lesions, detection and localization of resorptions, postoperative control and monitoring of treatment outcomes. It is also used in orthodontic treatment, as well as implant prosthodontics, facilitating prosthetic planning, selection of implants and the place of its installation [1,2,3]. Also, successful endodontic treatment largely depends on an adequate radiographic method, which should provide critical information about examined teeth and their surrounding anatomy.…”

“…The complications of dental implants vary in the range of 5-10% [ 3 , 4 ]. An important component of this method of treatment is the planning stage and, in particular, the use of radiological examination methods [ 5 , 6 ]. To date, we recommend the use of cone-beam computed tomography, which allows the doctor to determine if there is enough bone volume for implant placement and the type of architectonic bone and also to take into account the location of important anatomical structures.…”
