A modified proximity-coupled microstrip patch antenna with broad impedance bandwidth is proposed by incorporating proximity-coupled patch antenna into the rectangular open-ended microstrip feed line on a cavity structure. First we design a proximity-coupled microstrip antenna to have a wide bandwidth in the lower band centered at 7 GHz using a cavity-backed ground. To broaden the bandwidth of the antenna to the upper band, we then apply a rectangular open-ended microstrip feed line, adjusting the relative position to the cavity to generate an additional resonance close to 10 GHz. The combination of lower and upper band design results in a broadband antenna with dimensions of 30 mm × 30 mm × 9 mm (0.9λ0 × 0.9λ0 × 0.27λ0) is designed where λ0 corresponds to the free space wavelength at a center frequency of 9 GHz. The measurement results verify the broad impedance bandwidth (VSWR ≤ 2) of the antenna at 77% (5.6–12.6 GHz) while the broadside gain is maintained between 6 dBi and 8 dBi within the operational broad bandwidth.

The use of planar antenna for conformal applications is of great engineering use, however antenna embedding into conformal shapes need to be carefully studied. The analysis of cavity-backed proximity coupled micros trip antenna embedded in a cylindrical surface is presented. Cavity backed antenna is used for higher bandwidth. A dielectric layer, which is integrated on the surface of the antenna, is designed to shield the patches and make the cylindrical surface continuous. Dielectric substrate Rogers RT/duroid® 5880 with Er =2.2 and metallic material Aluminum is used for the cylinder. Edge fed and coax fed configurations are compared. Based on the ease of manufacturing and testing, coax fed antenna is used for embedding for conformal application. Simulation results including S-parameters, radiation pattern and gain are provided. The parametric study including the effect of material, thickness, radius and dielectric cover is also discussed for the design. Two types of cylindrical cuts are used with radii of 2A, 51.. and 101.. and thickness of 0.508mm and 7mm. The results indicate that the bandwidth of edge-fed and coax-fed antenna exceeds 40% and 30 % respectively at X-band and the impedance of the antenna is not sensitive to the cylindrical radius, however the radiation pattern is affected if the cylinder is cut into half or reduced even further. The radiation pattern is more stable in the case of dielectric half cylinder with reduced thickness as compared to the metallic reduced cylinder with increased thickness. The effect of dielectric cover is to shift the frequency band towards lower frequencies. Higher gain is observed for metallic cylinders. Such an antenna can easily be used for platform mounted applications like VA V, Missile or satellites.

In this paper, a cavity back slot antenna with a rotated rectangular patch is proposed. The proposed antenna consists of a ground plane with cavity structure, a microstrip feed line, and a rectangular patch with slot. With a dimension of 55 mm×40 mm×10 mm, the proposed antenna has the wide bandwidth due to the cavity structure. Measured 10 dB return loss bandwidth and fractional bandwidth of the proposed antenna is 5,030 MHz(3.02～8.05 GHz) and 90.9 % at the center frequency of 5.05 GHz. The proposed antenna is designed and simulated using ANSYS HFSS v.15.0.0. The designed antenna is fabricated and tested to validate its performances.
