Cavitas Sensors: Contact Lens Type Sensors & Mouthguard Sensors

Abstract: “Cavitas sensors” attached to body cavities such as the contact lens and mouthguard (“no implantable”, “no wearable”) are attracted attention as self‐detachable devices for daily medicine. Many types of contact lens (CL) sensors using electrical and optical methods have been developed for monitoring not only chemicals (glucose, lactate) and electrical conductivity in tear fluid, but also transcutaneous gases at eyelid mucosa. A CL intraocular pressure telemetric sensor has been also commercialized and applied … Show more

“…Chemical biomarkers, which can be used as indicators for specific diseases, are contained in tears. Tears have important functions, such as lubricating the cornea and conjunctiva, keeping the mucous membranes that form the ocular surface moist, nourishing the underlying cells, protecting the eyes against pathogens, and forming a flat, smooth layer on the uneven surface of the cornea …”

“…Widespread acceptance of wearable sensor technology requires the creation of products that can be easily integrated into an individual's lifestyle Most wearable chemical sensors have relied on sweat analysis in connection to flexible and temporary tattoo-like devices, 3,22,23 head bands, 24 or wrist bands. 14 Other platforms and accessories explored recently for on-body chemical sensing applications include mouthguards for saliva monitoring, 13,25 contact lenses for tear assays 26,27 or smart bandages for wound healing. 18,28 As the wearable sensor technology advances, there are urgent needs for addressing the challenges of merging the strengths of the fashion and wearable fields to create wearable fashion accessories that will lead to a widespread acceptance of wearable sensor technology.…”

“…Additionally, not all types of textiles are suitable to integrate sensing materials [38][39][40]. As an alternative, other flexible thin-film substrates (e.g., paper and plastic) have been explored [41][42][43][44][45][46]. However, the intrinsic fracture limit of the flexible thin-film materials is small (e.g., <1% for paper).…”
