Cavitand-Decorated Silicon Columnar Nanostructures for the Surface Recognition of Volatile Nitroaromatic Compounds

Abstract: Nanocolumnar Si substrates (porous silicon (PSi)) have been functionalized with a quinoxaline-bridged (EtQxBox) cavitand in which the quinoxaline moieties are bonded to each other through four ethylendioxy bridges at the upper rim of the cavity. The receptor, which is known to selectively complex aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) even in the presence of aliphatic compounds, has been covalently anchored to PSi. The larger surface area of PSi, compared to that of flat substrates, allowed one to study th… Show more

“…of 285.0 eV is typically associated to hydrocarbon atoms (aliphatic and aromatic) ,, as well as to the adventitious carbon. ,, The second component at the B.E. of 286.5–286.6 eV is associated to oxidized carbons of the adventitious C–O species often found on oxidized silicon surfaces ,,, and to C–N-containing species (aminoterephthalate and DMF) . A third component at 288.8 and 288.5 eV for NH 2 -Mil-101 and Mil-101, respectively, is typical of carboxylate groups (COO – ), , and it is a clear indication of the presence of the terephthalate species.…”

“…Gas adsorption was evaluated by exposing samples to vapors of aromatic compounds according to previously reported approaches [44,45]. Briefly, vapor adsorption was obtained by placing a-Si grown ZIF-8 films for 30 min in a closed chamber saturated at 25°C with toluene, nitrobenzene and water vapors (vapor pressures of about 3x10 3 Pa, 30 Pa and 3x10 3 Pa, respectively, calculated according to the Antoine equation [46]).…”
