Causing Global Warming

Abstract: Do I cause global warming, climate change and their related harms when I go for a leisure drive with my gas-guzzling car? The current verdict seems to be that I do not; the emissions produced by my drive are much too insignificant to make a difference for the occurrence of global warming and its related harms. I argue that our verdict on this issue depends on what we mean by 'causation'. If we for instance assume a simple counterfactual analysis of causation according to which 'C causes E' means 'if C had not … Show more

“…Elizabeth Cripps’ work on collective action for climate change, Christian Barry and Gerhard Øverland’s work on individual responsibility and emissions, my own arguments about the inevitability of climate outcomes, along with plenty of other more theoretical work (Barry & Øverland, 2015 ; Cripps, 2013 ; Funkhouser, 2002 ; Gunnemyr, 2019 ; Hale, 2011 ; Budolfson, 2021 , seem to operate along these lines. It is probably no accident that Martin Bunzl’s early research initially took up problems of overdetermination as well, but has shifted in recent years to uncertainty and risk in collective problems like climate change (Bunzl, 2014 ).…”

“…Notice that while we assume this type of individual difference, the perspective has a substantial literature supporting it (Almassi, 2012;Gunnemyr, 2019;Hourdequin, 2010;Sandberg, 2011;Sandler, 2010;Zoller, 2015). The scope of this work does not allow for a complete argument in favor of this position, which is another reason to assume it.…”
