Causes of Hypertensive Anterior Uveitis in Thailand

Abstract: Purpose: To determine the prevalence of viral infections in patients with hypertensive anterior uveitis in Thailand from polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of aqueous humor. Methods: Thirty-one patients with anterior uveitis with intraocular pressure (IOP) above 25 mmHg were included for PCR analysis for cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex (HSV), varicella-zoster (VZV), rubella, chikungunya and Zika virus. Results: The prevalence of PCR-positive results was 32%, including 19% for CMV, 10% for HSV, and 3% for VZ… Show more

“…Approximately 30.0% (9/30) of ocular hypertension demonstrated positive in PCR test and all were CMV. A Thailand study de ned ocular hypertension as IOP > 25mmHg and demonstrated 32% positivity in herpesviridae PCR, including 19% for CMV, 10% for HSV, and 3% for VZV [34]. In our study, 27 cases had IOP > 25mmHg and 25.9% (7/27) were positive for herpesviridae PCR with all CMV infections.…”

“…About 30.0% (9/30) of ocular hypertension cases had positive PCR test results, and all were CMVrelated. A study in Tailand defned ocular hypertension as IOP >25 mmHg and found 32% PCR positivity for Herpesviridae, including 19% for CMV, 10% for HSV, and 3% for VZV [38]. In our study, 27 cases had IOP >25 mmHg and 25.9% (7/27) were Herpesviridae PCR-positive, with all being CMV-related.…”

“…In elderly White females, posterior uveitis with retinal involvement was observed most frequently, while studies with a predominantly Black patient population primarily reported anterior uveitis 13,14 . Our patients had mean age of 42 years with male preponderance (66%) which was different from the study population in Korea which had mean age of 53 years and female preponderance 15 .…”
